With the end of summer comes tailgating, camping, and backyard cookouts. But hosting a successful cookout requires more than just throwing a few burgers on the grill. Planning a cookout is a big deal. One mistake can leave guests disappointed, hungry, or stuck in the rain.
The following checklist will help ensure your cookout is a success.
Know how many you’re feeding. You need to know how much food to buy (a good rule of thumb is one pound per person) and the amount of people eating it to properly time your grilling. Use a guest list to invite only as many mouths as you’re willing to feed — not the entire neighborhood.
Make a detailed shopping list. Be sure you have enough burgers, hot dogs, and buns to feed every guest twice. Also, stock up on cheese, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and other toppings. Encourage guests to contribute sides such as corn, beans, potato salad, pasta salad, and coleslaw, or condiments like mayo, ketchup, mustard, and relish. And don’t forget the ice!
Gather supplies in advance. Don’t wait until the last minute to make sure you have serving platters and utensils, or plates, napkins, cups, and forks for everyone. Also stock up on trash bags and paper towels for easy cleanup and grab a couple citronella candles if mosquitoes will be a problem.
Clean off your grill and then start it up to make sure it’s working. Check all the burners, and make sure you have enough propane or charcoal to get the job done. Nothing kills a cookout faster than a broken grill.
Plan for a worst-case weather scenario and have a backup plan in place. You can’t control the weather, but you can plan ahead. Make sure you have room for guests to go inside if it starts pouring rain, or a tent to keep them sheltered outside.
Have a variety of games ready. Backyard games are good icebreakers if not everyone on your guest list is acquainted with one another. Your guests will enjoy mingling while playing Corn Hole, Croquet, Horseshoes, or Giant Jenga.
Have fun no matter what happens. The best way to ensure your cookout is successful is to focus on friends and family instead of what’s going right or wrong. Your guests are more likely to remember the fun they had than whether their burger was burnt or you ran out of napkins.
