A great way to add some excitement to your home is by turning a spare space into a game room. It will provide endless hours of entertainment for family and friends, whether you are watching the big game or playing billiards. Not only will you love it, but should you eventually decide to sell the house, potential buyers will as well. Here are some things to think about when designing the perfect game room for your home.
Understand Your Space
First, consider the space you have to work with. You don’t need a huge area for a game room; often a spare bedroom or office will do nicely. However big the room is, you’ll need to be decisive about what you want – a couple billiards tables, a basketball machine, a card table, bar, and couch won’t fit into 99% of game rooms. Instead of cluttering everything up, keep in mind that you want the room to be relaxing and fun for everyone. Play around with the interior design of the room to maximize the space.
Provide Seating for Everyone
You’ll be spending a lot of time in your game room, so make sure that there’s a comfortable place to sit no matter what you are doing. Planning on playing pool for hours at a time? Though you have to stand to play, you’ll definitely want some comfortable seats for playing to lounge in between shots. And if you plan on hosting many game day parties in your game room, a large couch or two is a must. Bar stools or ottomans will also guests to gather around whatever activity is taking place.
Think About a Bar Area
Every great home game room has an area for drinks and refreshments. You might not have all the space required for an actual bar with stools, fridge, and TV, but that doesn’t mean you have to skip it altogether. If space is more limited, you could stock a bar cart with your favorite drinks, a mini fridge with sodas for the kids, and hang a tv on the wall above it.
Don’t Forget the Billiard Table
What game room is complete without one? A good pool table really ties the whole room together as the centerpiece and is the perfect activity for groups of all sizes. A common mistake many people make is not leaving enough room on all sides of the table for the full range of shots. If you aren’t exactly sure about the dimensions of the table, a good rule of thumb is to leave about 4 and ½ feet on every side.
